Description: In this course you will not only develop your communication skills to work on international movie sets, but also learn about essential audiovisual documents and gain practical experience through simulated on-set scenarios using breakout rooms and interactive documents in class. By the end of this course, students will have the basic tools to navigate smoothly through international film sets.

Content

Day 1. First day on set

Learn how to introduce yourself to your work mates on set in English and learn more about other main crew roles.

Day 2. Giving and receiving information + basic walkie lingo

Learn the basic strategies and terminology for smooth communication with the rest of the crew.

Day 3. Do’s and don’ts

Learn common set etiquette for effective communication with the crew.

Day 4. Film set logistics day 01. Important documents

Production Schedule.
Get familiar with the language in this essential on-set document and learn how to debate your point of view effectively.

Day 5. Film set logistics day 02. Important protocols

Location Scouting. Learn basic vocabulary to confidently talk and debate on location choices.

Day 6. Film set logistics day 03. Important documents

Call sheet + basic script breakdown elements for better understanding. Get familiar with the language and information used in this essential on-set document.

Day 7. Communication breakdown

Real life examples of mistakes and health issues on set. Role play possible mistakes and difficult situations and practice your way out of them.

Day 8. Selling yourself

Tips on how to self-promote. Learn how to exchange personal information and contacts, and how to get yourself out in the market to promote international interaction.

Julia has more than 11 years experience as an Assistant Director in the audiovisual industry, in association with prestigious players such as Netflix, Star Plus, Disney, Paramount, HBO, Viacom, CBS, Globoplay, Mixer, O2, Gullane and others. She has worked in both English and Portuguese speaking sets in over twenty productions. She graduated from UNSW (University of New South Wales, Sydney Australia) in Media, Culture and Technology and has an extension degree in Cinema, Television and Culture Related Subjects from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid – Madrid, Spain. She is currently one of the English Teachers at LATC, teaching English for Audiovisual Industry Professionals, as well as for individual ESL Students.

Online Short courses in technical English as applied to topics and functions on set and in the audiovisual industry in general, designed for busy professionals who have little time and well-defined goals.

The English course includes live online (synchronous) classes, organized in a live virtual classroom, where students and teachers meet. All participants are expected to be online and connected to the internet during classes. Classes are recorded and can be reviewed again if necessary.

The Payment may be paid using PayPal.

Each course is appropriate for a reccomended English level. For beginners, we offer Survival English for Audiovisual Professionals, to start learning English with specific situations found on an international audiovisual set.

You can take our Written English Proficiency Test to establish your current English level.

Since the English classes are live online, there is interaction with the professor and also with other participants who are also members of the audiovisual industry. Conversation is encouraged.

A series of handouts, including videos, audios and texts from the audiovisual sector, organized into activities that can be carried out in the classroom or as extra practice. Course materials were developed by qualified educators and validated by film industry professionals.

You will need a computer and an internet connection in order to attend class.
